"religious narcissism" The narcissist does not suffer delusions of self worth, but a never ending defense of the pretense of self worth. It is precisely the inner sense of unworthiness which drives him to present the image of the worthy, the exceptional. To seek the approval of others to assure him of the worth he does not see in himself. And, if that fails, then to seek the condemnation and hatred of those he can paint as villains who's disapproval demonstrates his worth. The only thing the narcissist cannot bear is irrelevance. To be left alone with that one creature he's completely certain is unworthy. Himself. Religious narcissism. I really like that phrase.
