There was a short window of time whence meritocracy existed - it was during the advent and proliferation of the internet within society - from 1996-2014. During this time, I watched so many around me (I was deeply entrenched in the online (IRC) community) become millionaires by providing services online that provided real value to people. I was lucky enough to do the same. Meritocracy existed because the Internet was the Wild Wild West - outside of the narrative of the world in which we live today. The world that you and I live in today, including its internet, is fully controlled by the powers that be and, with that, I agree, meritocracy is dead. They decide who can and cannot climb. **Your efforts, today, are meaningless**. But the dream for %%meritocracy doesn't have to die%%. **The Wild Wild West can make that dream possible, no matter the year, be it the past, be it now, be it the future.** No point in waiting - I think we all deserve the *gift* of meritocracy in the *present*. This is why @matt and I built soj.ooO. %%The Wild Wild West is back. %% I saw a post about dreams and I want to say, this is the dream I hope we will all achieve: *"the Wild Wild West that we loved so much, because it creates a system in which people are able to learn what they wish to learn, say what they wish to say, experience what they wish to experience, and create what they wish to create. I know this sounds corny, but an internet without boundaries or limitations, in which we can achieve our dreams, is our goal."* https://archive.is/BAKpb#selection-1325.35-1325.394

Just because our current system is broken doesn’t mean we have to live in that broken system forever. we can spend our lives complaining or we can develop solutions. even if it means we plant the tree without getting to enjoy the shade.
