The Balkans could be a cool place for an American expat. I know some of them and they do just fine, especially if they keep their US salary. Keep in mind, the Balkans is not cheap. Serbia as one of the strongest economies in the Balkans is pretty expensive, the same goes for Croatia. A 3-bed apartment in Belgrade downtown goes almost like a house in an upscale Great Los Angeles neighborhood. Serbia blends the Middle East, Augsburg, and Eastern European Slavic culture - food is very close to Middle Eastern - Turkish. Whoever likes Turkish food, will do just fine in Serbia.

I completely agree. If you get outside of Belgrade the costs come way way down. I was just there a few weeks ago scouting places out. Same goes for Turkiye - if you are in a nice part of Istanbul, you are at $300k to $1 million USD for a central property and most would be condos. Go outside by 30 mins to an hour and you are 30% of those costs. You also have Izmir and the beach towns like Alanya and Antlya, but the prices are nuts due to Russians and Ukranians leaving the war and getting citizenship. Tripled in five years.
