You may want to talk to the "founders" of America about that. They built this system to constrain the evil of men. How is that working out?

Your implication is that it's not. Hence, obviously, pretending that we're playing by those rules is nonsensical. But, that doesn't really matter because in almost every case those very same "founders" were just as corrupt as the people of today. Still, the country made it through, in some form or another, almost 250 years of scams and turmoil. What's truly simple is imagining that corruption happened in the the last decade or so.
