Upon reading that again, I do sound really negative. My words are colored by a failed marriage so…take my attitude with a grain of salt. I’m not immune to bitterness. I do want to add the heaven part—for balance. I didn’t experience this but I believe that what makes a marriage “heaven” on earth is that, with humility and compassion, two people can overcome those traumas, those character flaws that cut so deep. A “good”, “Christian” marriage is one that always relies on God, the one who put the two people together in the first place. Often, a couple relies on their own strength which, if we’re being honest, is next to nothing. Most people have insurmountable weaknesses and the heavenly part of a sacramental marriage is that the partner, the other half, loves the other despite the hell they bring and, sometimes, because of it. I wouldn’t want my partner to be perfect. Sometimes, it’s almost like we grow closer to the one we love because they are weak. In that weakness, we learn from God, how to show 1 Corinthians 13 love, and in doing so, we heal ourselves at the same time. Loving someone, as you’ve previously mentioned, ought to be selfless. In a marriage, we take the other person for granted and expect that love on tap, unconditionally. It takes time to adjust expectations and accept the other person for what they really are—and that’s not a god. Marriage requires gargantuan courage but, from my dreams anyway, it’s worth it.

I believe marriage should be considered a special privilege reserved for very few, very special men and women, neither a right nor a social obligation, per traditional conservatives, as for the bitches, and faggots, who cares what they think?
