The range numbers sound extreme until you break them down. Ten to 30 kilometers is roughly six to 19 miles, with some reported systems reaching up to 50 kilometers, or about 31 miles. But range, battery, spool weight and payload all fight each other. At some point you are not delivering a warhead. You are delivering an expensive spool of fiber to a field. The spool arrives. That is the mission. Fixed-wing and gas-powered drones would change the math because wings are more efficient than rotors and gasoline carries far more usable energy per pound than batteries. But even then, fiber has limits. Past a certain range, autonomous or AI-guided systems start making more sense than dragging glass across miles of contested airspace. In that sense, fiber is the poor man’s AI. When radio is unreliable and full autonomy is not ready or affordable, you run glass and keep a human in the loop. That is where my own background made this more interesting. I have worked with fiber since around 2000, mostly in data centers. Some of my early work involved streaming video over fiber networks, along with Fibre Channel storage, active Ethernet, switch-to-server and SAN-to-storage links. Clean, labeled, protected rack-environment glass. Nobody was paying it out behind a quadcopter at 60 kilometers per hour. Looking back, there is an odd symmetry to it. Twenty-five years ago I was helping move video streams through fiber in climate-controlled data centers. Today people are using fiber to move live video from drones flying over active battlefields. The environment changed dramatically. The physics did not. The broadband installer certification class I took with my son was my first real hands-on exposure to outside-plant fiber: PON, splitters, OTDR work, fusion splicing and attenuation budgets. Data center fiber gave me the signal layer. The drone stories pushed me toward the physical layer. The broadband course filled in the field side. Most people hear “fiber-optic drone” and picture exotic military hardware. Underneath it is ordinary fiber knowledge: glass, light, loss, bend radius, splice quality, breaks and reels. The unusual part is not that light can carry the signal. The unusual part is watching the battlefield rediscover the cable after decades of wireless-first design. We spent years making radio links faster and more reliable. Then jamming matured to the point where the answer became: bring the cable with you.
