I would point to the discovery of nylon and it's use as an easy to make fabric. Nylon stockings and their associated shortages even caused small riots. Eventually came nylon/cotton blends and other mixed media fabrics. Specifically, the mix of organic and inorganic fibers. This accelerated the cheapening. Companies were able to get away with using shorter and shorter fiber cotton when it was mixed with nylon/polyester etc. Cheaper and cheaper materials, cheaper and easier to manufacture weaves. Twill fabric is almost regarded as high class now, when it was pretty much a standard for many hard wearing clothing for a long time. Down and down we go, the purity spiral of economic profits have led us to modern times where 100% natural fiber clothing is very uncommon to find new. Almost everything is just some fancily woven plastic bag now. It's not economically viable to make clothing that lasts longer than a few machine washes anymore. TL;DR - No, nylon stockings are.
