In the original Greek text of Revelation 22:15, the word used is κύνες (kynes), which is literally the plural word for "dogs" (from the singular kýōn / κύων).

However, its usage in this verse is entirely metaphorical and figurative. It does not mean actual four-legged animals are excluded from heaven; rather, it carries a deep cultural and spiritual stigma.

To understand what it means by "something more," you have to look at the ancient Near Eastern context of what a "dog" represented:

1\. Wild Scavengers, Not Pets

In the first-century Mediterranean world, dogs were generally not viewed as beloved household pets. They were mostly wild, half-starved pack animals that roamed the streets, scavenged through garbage, and licked wounds. Because of this, calling someone a dog was an insult denoting someone who was morally filthy, shameless, or bestial.

2\. A Ritual and Jewish Idiom

In ancient Jewish thought, "dogs" was a common derogatory term used to describe:

• Gentiles (Non-Jews): Those outside of God's covenant, who did not follow God's laws of purity.

• Male Cult Prostitutes: In Deuteronomy 23:18, the "wages of a dog" is a Hebrew idiom explicitly used parallel to a male temple prostitute. Given that Revelation 22:15 groups "the dogs" immediately alongside the "sexually immoral", many scholars believe it specifically refers to those who practiced ritual sexual perversion.

3\. Spiritual Apostates

Elsewhere in the New Testament, the term is used for people who know the truth but completely reject it to live in unrighteousness. For example, 2 Peter 2:22 quotes the proverb: "A dog returns to its own vomit." Similarly, Paul warns in Philippians 3:2: "Watch out for those dogs, those evildoers, those mutilators of the flesh."

Summary

While the Greek word literally translates to "dogs", the author is using it as a sharp, comprehensive label for the morally impure, the unholy, and those who shamelessly reject God’s boundaries.  They were not literally saying dogs are evil or despised by God.
