March (Latin: Martius) was the first month of the year in the earliest Roman calendar. Named after Mars, the god of war, it marked the beginning of spring and the season for farming and military campaigns. The year was later reorganized to begin in January, moving March to the third position. (Wikipedia) Key Facts About the Shift: Original Calendar: The original Roman calendar had only 10 months, beginning in March and ending in December. The Change: Around 700 BCE, King Numa Pompilius added January and February to the beginning of the year, although March remained the start of the legal year for some time. Official Change: The Roman calendar officially shifted to start on January 1 around 153 BCE. Historical Usage: In many places, including England and its colonies, March 25th was considered the start of the legal new year until 1752. Evidence in Names: September, October, November, and December are named after the Latin for 7th, 8th, 9th, and 10th months, proving they were originally 7th-10th, not 9th-12th.
