I lived in Japan from 2001 to 2004.  Aomori prefecture.  When in town you’d see patrons wearing medical masks on I never saw that before. On in hospitals state side. But they wore them to venture in town to get supplies and groceries.  But to protect local community from THEIR ill feeling.  Not as a filter to keep them safe.  Truly worked for years. The common sense approach to local ways.  I admired that. Embraced the philosophy.  Boom COVID.  Now these politicians say wear a mask to FILTER your air to keep you safe.  Ha. Drs wear them so they don’t breath,cough,sneeze impurities on medical patients during operations.  Again. Not as a filter.  So many sheep just believed it filtered micron germs and would keep you safe.  And. You could just keep reusing it.  For a long time.  SMH.  Yes Matt.  Your statement is true.
