I can swim a mile. There's parts of the ocean more than a mile deep. Unusually dense skeleton and musculature. Can't float. I could maybe get a hundred yards or so. Maybe. At my best. Which I'm not anymore. I actually found it more convenient to just swim underwater for as long as I could hold my breath, burst to the top and go back down with a fresh lungfull. Only works in shallow water though. Grew up downwind of the Nevada nuclear bomb tests next to a gunnery range. I tripped the geiger counters in science class roughly the same as a radium watch. Might be relevant. Maybe not.
