I don't know if this can be considered a conspiracy theory but even as a child I found it absolutely insufferable that every cartoon I watched always featured a really stupid male main character that I literally avoided any episode of Spongebob featuring Patrick. I always watched cartoons for the story and if I didn't like the story, or the main main character I did not watch the cartoon. I believed even in the 90s, being a young inspiring writer/animator that cartoons were being purposely dumbed down because if your audience is stupid, you can get away with pumping out slop to them. In the 90s watching YuYuHakusho, Inuyasha, Techi Muyo, you had to pay attention to truly appreciate the anime which spoiled me rotten.

I have made similar observations and conclusions, although maybe I'm a bit older as I do remember some good times with positive male influence in media and cartoons.

My father was a cartoonist in the 90s and told my elder brother and I, you can tell what animes are worth watching if the anime runs 16 to 24 episodes, animes with 50+ are likely to be full of filler. Til this day this is the metric I use for watchable anime.
