I wish I had seen your post before I made one about it. Inconvenient history needs to be researched independently, even if there have been detailed reports and inquiries into this incident. It just goes to show how controlled our information environment has been in general  Not the most accurate meme, but still funny:) There was actually a temporary income tax during the Civil War. Then in 1913 — the same year the Federal Reserve Act was passed — the 16th Amendment was ratified, giving Congress the power to levy income taxes without apportionment among the states. A few months later they implemented the first permanent federal income tax… of course aimed at the super rich. It was WWI that supercharged it into what exists today.
