The USA scrap fires at first glance sound odd so I looked to see how many fires are burning in a typical week. In the USA, there are an estimated 1 to 2 reported junkyard or scrap metal fires per week. Official fire reporting classifications such as those by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) typically group junkyards under "outside or special property" or "industrial/manufacturing" categories. However, industry-specific organizations, like Fire Rover, track these incidents closely. It looks like there are around double the normal number over the last six weeks.

It’s hard to judge the official stats, but I really appreciate the internet for all the “noticing” that happens there. For scrapyards and auto recycling businesses, losing inventory in a fire is a massive risk, especially when so much of it is used parts that are extremely difficult to properly value and substantiate for insurance claims. There’s a real shift happening with consumer rights when it comes to new vehicles and the direction the government seems to be pushing us toward.
