The Evil Dead is a great example. Terrible movie. Why did it resonate so much with people? Because the creators set out to scare people but made them laugh instead. When fans panned the movie, the filmmakers pivoted and made the second one which hit the target expertly; it was and is one of the best fusion films of all time, imo. Take the zeitgeist and play with it. So, in that way, it was fun. I think bad movies and ugly art are still useful if they make people feel what they either don’t want to feel or feel when they didn’t think they should feel anything at all. Isn’t that what art is? They say it imitates life and I really like it when it ridicules life. “Bad” art is still art because it generates something in me that I didn’t have before. Truly bad art leaves one apathetic.
