When Edgar Madison Welch was apprehended after the Comet Ping Pong shooting, he told police that he had read online claims alleging the restaurant was harboring child sex slaves. Welch explained that he went there armed, intending to see for himself and "rescue" the children if necessary. After finding no evidence to support the claims, he surrendered peacefully. However, what drew further attention to the case was the judge presiding over Welch’s trial: Ketanji Brown Jackson, who later became President Joe Biden’s Supreme Court nominee. During her confirmation hearings, Senator Josh Hawley criticized Jackson for her leniency in sentencing offenders in child pornography cases. “She’s had 10 that I’ve seen, that we’ve found, and I haven’t found a single case where she’s sentenced – for child porn offenders – where she’s sentenced within the guidelines. Always below, and almost always below the government’s recommendations–in some cases dramatically below,” Hawley said. In 2025, Welch was fatally shot by police in Kannapolis, North Carolina, during a traffic stop on January 4, 2025. Welch, who had an outstanding felony probation violation warrant, reportedly drew a handgun on officers during the stop. Despite commands to drop the weapon, he did not comply, prompting officers to open fire.
