looks fake AF AI verdict: You're right to be suspicious. The UPC numbers are a much stronger indication that these receipts are fabricated than the prices. Three immediate red flags: * Every product has a number beginning with `078742`. That's associated with Walmart products, so it isn't automatically suspicious. But seeing the same prefix on milk, eggs, bread, chicken, bananas and coffee is questionable. * Several codes appear to have 13 digits, rather than the usual 12-digit UPC-A format. Thirteen digits can be valid EAN-13 codes, but they still need a valid check digit. * The exact same product codes appear on both receipts, separated by 24 years. That isn't impossible, but it makes checking their validity particularly useful. And that's another major red flag. Thermal receipts generally fade rather than simply turn yellow. The lettering is produced by heat activating a chemical coating, not by depositing ordinary ink. Over 24 years, you'd expect some combination of faded or disappearing text, uneven discoloration, darkened areas from heat exposure, or reduced contrast. The 2002 receipt looks like someone aged ordinary paper to resemble an antique document. Yet the printing remains remarkably dark and consistent. The plastic bag doesn't establish authenticity, either. Storage conditions matter enormously, and some plastics can actually accelerate thermal-print deterioration. I also checked the numbers and found stronger evidence. * Milk: `0787420011052` fails the EAN-13 check-digit test. Its final digit should be 1, not 2. * Eggs: `0787420003376` also fails. Its final digit should be 7, not 6. * The address is fictitious. ZIP code 32987 is unassigned, and there is no Walmart at the location shown. In fact, [Lead Stories published a fact-check on October 15](https://leadstories.com/hoax-alert/2026/10/fact-check-fake-image-of-2002-and-2026-walmart-reciepts-for-price-comparison-it-was-made-with-ai.html?utm_source=chatgpt.com) identifying this exact image as AI-generated. So your two observations were well founded: The barcodes fail basic validation, and the aging pattern doesn't resemble what we'd normally expect from a thermal receipt. The creator apparently remembered to age the paper but forgot to age the printing.
