Wow Matt, I felt a pull from you with this post. I struggled with religion my entire life. I was raised as a catholic and struggled w/ the fear in God I learned from it. I gave a snip of my struggle with religion on my first post yesterday. Speaking from my own personal experiences, I would begin with the practice of spending lots of time alone with your thoughts. Learn to observe your thoughts by putting all your focus on your breath. The mind initially runs like a freight train, non-stop, until you train it. So, every time you catch yourself entertaining a thought by running with it, that's when you stop and put the focus right back on your breathing. Initially this takes a lot of patience and work. You do that; put time aside every day for practice; then overtime your thoughts begin to slow down. Then what ends up happening in the long-term is that little voice inside you, that is, the observer within gets louder and eventually comes forward, and your ego takes a step back. Then your able to ask questions and get your answers. Prayer or communion with God within is accomplished. Sometimes you won't get the answer right away, but you'll know when it does. And after that, you will know the answer on how to find God, and no one can take that away from you! Today, in the middle of the world falling apart and possibly losing everything, I have moments of grace in the middle of chaos. I am assured within that I am where I am supposed to be and doing what I am supposed to do. That everything that's taking place around the world is supposed to happen. I understand that I cannot control the challenges the world throws at me, but only how I respond or react to it. And a deeper understanding of that is powerful. That's the spirit within people that the government despise. Matt, I spent almost 50 years searching for God, and I discovered that God can only live within. I visited many different churches/religions searching for God. My theory today is that the church was created by people in power, perhaps by the same people that created government. Thus, I still believe in God, but not the church nor the bible. The thing about the bible is that true accounts are lost with changes over time. The bible can be interpreting many different ways. I believe Jesus existed, and what happened to him, but I bet that if it could be proven, more than half of what's written in the bible was by people in power for power and control.
