Oh man, that was me exactly. I was so proud of the fact that I always stood by my principles and followed my own way. Didn't even listen to my parents or teachers when I thought they were wrong. Got shown the door at 3 jobs because I wouldn't be a yes man. Protested against the government after a warning letter was issued that all protesters would be fired from their jobs and jailed. So many other examples, but I know you can alreasy relate.   
  
That was true for 40 years and then, in just one day, I realized that I was worshipping, not one, but two powers... the government and society.  
  
Worship might sound like an odd word to use, but only because we usually think of worship in religious terms, bowing and praying etc. But what is worship in simpler terms? Accepting another entity's supremacy, and giving it priority and authority over your own agency? Showing reverence to their commandments, doing acts that you wouldn't do by yourself ordinarily, with your own free will, especially if there was no punitive repercussions.  
  
I paid taxes, wore clothes in public, took off my shoes at airports, didn't carry hash on flights, didn't take the law into my own hands, and I definitely didn't make speeches in a public square about how the most destructive industries in the USA are all owned by Zionists, all of whom have been involved in despicable crimes against humanity.  
  
Was a hard pill to swallow... the realization that no matter how brave and free I believed myself to be, no matter how much i argued that rules, laws and taxes are made for the common good by public mandate, the fact is many things I did do, and many I didn't do, were not what I would have done, if I truly refused to accept any authority but my own.   
  
You may want to use another term instead of worship, but I think you know what I mean..., the wilful or forced acceptance of an outside power or entity which changes your actions or behavior.   
  
In essence, without even realizing it, we obey the government, we live according to the rules of society and for most, our aim is to please our wives and children.  
  
Going back to the hypothetical example... no matter how brave we believe ourselves to be, we all have breaking points. Forget God or government, even if a criminal gang was to kidnap and threaten our toddler or mother with torture 24/7 for a decade, we would obey their directions. We would beg, borrow and steal if we had to, to raise the ransom required to save ourselves or our families from a real threat.  
  
I think that generally, brave and honorable people like to think they won't break. But in reality, especially when tested to the limits, we all recognize that yes, there's a limit to the illusion of independent, uncompromising bravery. In reality, i think I'd be hard pressed to find a man who woud not save himself or his family from being brutally tortured 24/7 for years, just to make a point that he would never obey commands of a more powerful force.  
  
I know it was just a hypothetical question, but giving it a touch of reality allows us to answer more honestly, and those answers tell us the truth about ourselves.  
  
Of course, my logic and understanding might be way off, even totally wrong.
