I think, both are equally important as one is our ability to express freely and exercise our 1st Amendment and the other is to live safely with like-minded people based on some social contract which will provide safety and sustainability. A space that will be technologically advanced but also off the grid and independent in case of major predicaments. I own a home in the greater LA suburb, which is heavily regulated by the HOA and heavy CA bureaucracy. I can only imagine how quickly everything would crumble if something major and unexpected would happen. I own a home but do I make all the decisions, absolutely not... Also, it is important to acquire different skills. I'm a Software Engineer and imagine if we end up in a society without power. Suddenly our skills are becoming obsolete and useless unless we acquire new ones... I'm digressing a little, but food for thought...

I'm thinking along the same lines. Just to add something, canned food is great in an emergency but can also be used in daily life. Boats are useful when there's a flood but also to catch fish. Somehow the community must be sustainable in a low-volatility environment but also be robust to extreme shocks. Very rare to see both in an agglomeration of humans.
