Mostly because Protestants came much later, after Martin Luther. It's likely a generational and geographical thing. Many Italians, Brazilians, other countries are predominately catholic because of the presence of the Catholic church so early on in those areas.

Much of Christianity in the Protestant realm was just that - a protest towards the practices (maybe even the pedophilia) in the Catholic Church.
