There's several schools of thought this reminds me of. The first is that a Christian should actively stand against evil, some 501c3 pastors take that to mean praying quietly in the broom closet and leaving it all there, because they misread a verse about sovereignty and think that means they don't have to do a thing. I take it to mean being involved and stopping it from occurring as I can. The next is that the bible makes it abundantly clear that the only valid **human** authority is Husband over wife, and Father/Mother over children. All other things fall under Love God above all and others as yourself, ie; 'Don't hurt others, and if you do pay restitution'. So I don't consider any government or 'authority' legitimate, they're not God, God has not explicitly ordained them. I'm being forced to interact with them against my will, and so will take advantage of any lever I can pull to influence things the way I think it should go according to the understanding the Lord has given me. The last is that a key mission of the body of christ is to Reclaim as much of creation as possible. You see this from the stories about saints going against pagan gods and winning (the holy spirit moved in and restricted the other powers, thus why there's lesser activity today, there's more of the spirit in the world in us) or like taking over holidays like Christmas, it was paganish to begin with, but most have reclaimed it for Christ's birth Those tell me that REAL church elders should be influencing their community on all things social & political, drive it from the local all the way up. This includes telling people how to vote as well as standing against false authority (ie; sort of like the Bundy stuff the last few years). However, that means they need to be earning the right to speak into people's lives by living and working with them, not just doing some crappy pop music and a bad ted talk on sunday.

I think I have a text prepared for my book that describes the relations between church and state through the Protestant confessional documents. I’ll post it here when I find it. Definitely, the last one since we are called to participate - otherwise, we are leaving the political realm solely to unbelievers which policies will affect us as well, which war more than obvious during the previous administration.
