Apostasy, and it's variants in the Greek, means to fall away, to depart from, to defect, to withdraw from, etc. The aforementioned false religions/sects/denominations/etc., have departed from the truth of who God is, who Christ is, what His Gospel is, etc. Sure, they still use the same names. They will name God, Christ, the divine Persons of the Trinity, and so on. However, they have abandoned the true faith. How? By adding to the divine revelation via visions, visitations, tongues, additional infallible books, or papal bulls, or councils (like the council of trent). They ignore, to their own peril, Revelation 22:18 "For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall ADD UNTO these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book" Likewise, they apostacize when they deny the all-sufficiency of the blood of Christ alone, and His finished salvific work on the cross alone, as the sole ground/basis of the justification of a sinner saved. When they say that it is Christ's work PLUS some ritual, or ceremony, or work, or sacrament, or saying that must be added, they depart from the Gospel, they depart from the faith (Galatians 1:8-9; Galatians:10-14). Galatians 2:16 declares "Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified." It was Martin Luther, in reading Galatians so carefully, and prayerfully, as led by the Holy Spirit, that saw the errors of works-based Catholic religion, and helped to fuel the Protestant Reformation. Consider this master verse on apostasy -- 1 John 2:18-20 "Little children, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists; whereby we know that it is the last time. 19 THEY WENT OUT FROM US, BUT WERE NOT OF US; for if they had been of us, they would \[no doubt\] have continued with us: but \[they went out\], that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us. 20 But ye have an unction from the Holy One, and ye know all things." Notice the fact that there were those who appeared to have the truth, but apostatized, going out (away from, forsaking) both the truth, and those who had the truth. This is what Syncretic Romanism and Orthodoxy did. These religious deviations incorporated paganinity into their false notions of Christianity. They added works to the Gospel making it no Gospel (see Galatians 1), and they trusted in their age, their supposed straight succession from Peter (which is a falsehood) ignoring the warnings of Revelation chapters 2 & 3. They trusted in their priesthood, in their rituals/customs, in their rosaries and ceremonies, and in everything else but the Holy Spirit, and the Godhead as a whole, in and through Christ Jesus the Lord. FInally, notice the language "YE have an UNCTION from the HOLY ONE, and ye know all things" -- it doesn't say "The pope has an unction from the Holy One," or "The Catholic church has an unction," it states "ye have an unction." Every Christian, every member of the Body of Christ, which is Christ (through union with the Head -- 1 Corinthians 12:12) has this unction. They have the Holy Spirit leading them into all truth. It doesn't mean they know everything inerrantly. It means that all that God foreordained for them to know, and grow into, the Holy Spirit leads them therein, through His holy Word, the Bible. Yes, he gives us pastors, preachers, teachers, but the Spirit of God is what leads all who are His. He leads the teachers, and He leads His people to be good Bereans (Acts 17:11). We have no need to call any man father, or papa (pope), or rabbi... we trust in Christ alone, by faith alone, via the Holy Scripture alone, by grace alone, to the glory of God alone, all by the Spirit of God, through perfect union with Christ. Catholicism understands none of this; it is not true Christianity. It is a many centuries old corrupt counterfiet. [apostasia](https://www.blueletterbible.org/lexicon/g646/kjv/tr/0-1/)
