I've bought on Coinbase before so maybe this will help. I think regardless of the platform, there are two things to consider. 1\. What price do you want to buy/sell the Asset at? (Limit Order) 2\. How bad/quick do you want to buy/sell the Asset at? (Market Order) In your case, it sounds like the default market order was set on Coinbase (I made the same mistake my first time). The market price keeps changing every milli-second (or faster) depending on the market volatility, so what you see might not be what you get. There is a toggle to go into advanced mode, where you can set the "limit" price, i.e. the price you want to buy/sell it for. Also, Coinbase has a tiered service offering, so the fee change accordingly. There's so much more to this but hopefully gets you on the right path. In the long run, unless you're trading this, I see the "fee" as the cost of convenience or doing business. I realize this is a contentious statement but if you're holding long-term the rewards will hopefully outweigh the short-term cost/fees. Welcome to the Bitcoin family!
