Nothing wrong with any of that. Commercial corn fields tend to be stripped of nitrogen and other nutrients. Go to the supermarket and buy some dry beans and peas. Just randomly plant them. Cover the area. Turn them into weeds. Get some daikon radish seed. Buy everything you can in bulk. The savings are astronomical. Get some daikon growing. Plant clover. These are all nitrogen fixers. You could cover the entire place with beans for a few dollars, but you definitely want all the variety you can get. You want something blooming for the entire year. Pay attention to what sorts of weeds you find overwhelming you. Do some research and you'll generally see they're demonstrating something lacking in the soil. There is no overnight system that's going to turn this plot into your dream, and by the way, you need to learn to dream what it becomes, not what you envision now. Considering it's been corn fields I'll presume the soil isn't sandy. Does it get muddy? Stick to your feet? That means it's been killed. Once you get your soil healthy it will take water without getting muddy. Make sure you plant as many different things as you can. For every "crop" plant a flower, maybe two. The problem with fertilizers is that you need to get the coffee grounds from three coffee shops. The egg shells from three restaurants and so on. Sure, give it your coffee grounds and any other scraps, but you're not going to generate enough of them to cover an 1/8 acre, let alone two. We compost virtually everything and it amounts to essentially nothing. We haul in manure and use our grass clippings and it amounts to not that much overall difference. What makes a difference is what you grow.
