Johnny Appleseed has entered the chat. I actually like the vision. More fruit trees, composting, shared food, and people taking responsibility for the land fits John Chapman pretty well. He was a Swedenborgian, is often described as vegetarian, and was known for his concern about harming animals. The video is showing something a little different from what Johnny usually did, though. Rooting a cutting is basically cloning the existing tree. Chapman was famous for growing apples from seed, producing genetically new trees. And then: “Kids can walk to school, and on the way pick an apple…” No. They should homeschool. Then the apple tree becomes biology, horticulture, history, compost science, math and lunch. Plant the trees. Feed the neighborhood. Compost the cores. Keep the kids home.
