"IMO they don't make this public because they reason that it would scare the general public, which is probably true although to what extent I don't know." If you want to watch movies depicting AI how you see it then go watch Wall-E or Chappie, both of them did great in the box office. In fact Wall-E grossed more income then the first matrix or terminator.
