The original argument makes an important distinction between several different meanings of “simulation.” At the cognitive level, human beings necessarily encounter the world through incomplete internal models. At the institutional level, organizations construct representations of us—profiles, scores, categories, records—that substitute for the much more complicated people and circumstances they describe. At the cybernetic level, those representations become part of feedback loops: models produce decisions, decisions alter the world, and the altered world supplies the data for the next model. Computational descriptions of nature add another layer, but none of these observations proves the much larger claim that reality itself is being run by an inaccessible intelligence on some external substrate.

That distinction matters because the most consequential simulation may not be the hypothetical one above us. It may be the countless simulations we are already running here.

What particularly interests me is what happens when a representation ceases merely to describe reality and begins to participate in producing it. Once I form a sufficiently strong model of a person, event, institution, or future, I rarely leave that model alone. I investigate it. I test it. I anticipate it. I make decisions around it. I may begin arranging my behavior according to what I think will happen.

The observer has become a participant.

This makes me wonder whether our obsession with understanding reality sometimes prevents us from discovering what reality would have done without our interference.

Doctor Strange in Avengers: Endgame provides a useful fictional illustration. Strange examines millions of possible futures and discovers one in which Thanos can be defeated. We normally interpret this as foresight: Strange has discovered the future that will work.

But there is another way to read it.

Once Strange possesses that information, he behaves differently because of it. He permits certain events to occur, makes particular choices, and communicates information at decisive moments. The prediction therefore enters the causal chain that produces the outcome.

In that sense, Strange may not simply have seen the successful future. By modeling it and subsequently acting according to the model, he helped create it.

There are real scientific ideas that resemble pieces of this phenomenon, although none establishes that consciousness magically controls physical reality.

Quantum mechanics gives us the striking example of the quantum Zeno effect: under particular experimental conditions, repeated measurement can inhibit a quantum system’s evolution. The lesson is not that human attention freezes reality. Quantum “observation” is a physical interaction, not simply someone thinking about something. But the analogy is provocative: interrogating a system can become part of what the system does.

Cybernetics makes the point at the level where human life actually operates. We observe something, construct a model, act according to the model, change the environment, observe the changed environment, and then use that new information to reinforce or revise the original model.

The sequence becomes:

reality → observation → model → action → altered reality → observation

Predictive-processing and active-inference theories make this even more interesting. Organisms do not merely passively receive reality. They generate predictions about it. Sometimes new evidence causes us to revise our predictions. But sometimes we act upon the environment in ways that make our experience conform more closely to what we predicted.

This produces an uncomfortable possibility.

Suppose an uncertain situation has ten plausible interpretations:

A · B · C · D · E · F · G · H · I · J

I become convinced that D is true.

I begin asking D-shaped questions. I notice D-shaped evidence. I make D-shaped decisions. Other people respond to those decisions. Their responses become new evidence. Eventually the situation increasingly resembles D.

I can then congratulate myself:

“I knew it.”

But did I?

Perhaps I discovered D.

Perhaps I helped produce D.

Or perhaps reality contained something I never encountered because my intervention eliminated the conditions under which it could emerge.

That possibility changes how I think about agency.

Usually we imagine agency as increasing with intervention. The more variables I understand, predict, manipulate, and control, the more agency I supposedly possess.

But perhaps there is another kind of agency: strategic non-intervention.

If intervention reduces the possibility space, deliberate non-intervention can sometimes preserve it.

Instead of:

model → certainty → intervention → confirmation

we might sometimes choose:

observation → uncertainty → restraint → emergence

That does not require fatalism. Nor does it require believing that an unseen programmer has already written the correct outcome. Free will does not have to mean sovereignty over everything around me. I can be a genuine causal participant in reality without assuming that every available variable therefore belongs under my control.

Agency can include choosing not to exercise agency in a particular place.

That distinction also offers a way to think about projection. Human beings inevitably project models onto incomplete information. Perhaps the problem is not projection itself. Imagination, prediction, hypothesis, and interpretation are indispensable.

The danger begins when we give the projection executive authority.

“I think this may be true” leaves reality room to answer.

“I know this is true, and I will therefore organize events accordingly” can eventually make the distinction between discovery and construction extraordinarily difficult to recover.

This also provides a more cautious way to approach claims about thought, intention, prayer, ritual, manifestation, or magic. Human thoughts unquestionably alter reality through ordinary causal pathways. Thoughts change attention. Attention changes decisions. Decisions change behavior. Behavior affects other people. Groups turn shared ideas into institutions, laws, markets, wars, buildings, technologies, and cultures.

Ideas become physical consequences constantly.

That fact is extraordinary enough without requiring us to claim that consciousness directly rearranges matter at a distance. There is presently no established scientific evidence for that stronger proposition. The demonstrable mechanism is already immensely powerful: a representation becomes causally real when agents begin organizing reality around it.

And this brings me back to simulation theory.

Perhaps the most useful question is not whether somebody outside our universe is running a simulation.

Perhaps it is:

How many simulations are we running inside this one?

Every model of another person is a tiny simulation.

Every prediction is a simulation.

Every institutional profile is a simulation.

Every imagined future is a simulation.

And whenever we grant one of those representations enough authority to determine what happens next, the simulation reaches outward and begins altering the reality it was supposedly created merely to describe.

That suggests a principle I find more useful than speculation about inaccessible substrates:

Every attempt to reduce uncertainty through intervention risks replacing the unknown future with a future partly produced by the intervention.

Strategic non-intervention therefore isn’t nihilism, helplessness, or surrender.

It is epistemic humility.

It is admitting that I cannot always distinguish the future I have discovered from the future I have helped manufacture.

And sometimes the only way to learn the difference is to stop touching the system.

That leaves me with an odd conclusion.

We began by wondering whether reality is a simulation and whether human beings possess meaningful agency inside it. But perhaps the more urgent problem is almost the reverse: human beings may possess so much local causal power that we continually construct simulations, mistake them for reality, and then reshape reality until it resembles them.

If so, one of the most sophisticated uses of agency may occasionally be the deliberate refusal to use it.

Do not calculate another branch.

Do not optimize another variable.

Do not force the unknown into a familiar category.

Do not demand that reality immediately explain itself.

Leave something unmodeled.

Leave something unresolved.

Leave something alone.

And see what happens.

Perhaps strategic non-intervention is not the absence of a move.

Perhaps it is the move that preserves all the moves we have not yet imagined.

Or, more simply, perhaps after all our thinking about what to do with reality, the next thing worth seriously considering is—

Nothing at all.

Sometimes the unoccupied space in a causal system is precisely what allows something not designed by us to emerge.
